Forty-five years of memories went up in flames as a mother and four children watched their eight bedroom burn down last Friday evening.

Their concrete and timber structured building caught fire around 8pm and this has also forced six people to become homeless in Naboutini, Sabeto in Nadi.

Umesh Chand, 52, a shuttle driver at the Tanoa International Hotel was at work when the incident happened.

“My father bought this house 45 years ago, I was only seven years old then.

“I basically grew up in this house, got married had kids and they even got married too,” an emotional Mr Chand said.

He said the total losses were estimated to be around $150,000.

Police spokesperson Inspector Josaia Weicavu said the fire was believed to have started from a religious section of the house.

“Police and the National Fire Authority (NFA) had assessed the damage. The investigation is still ongoing,” he said.
