The payment of new fishing levies will be transparent.

Speaking to the Fiji Sun yesterday, the Deputy Permanent Secretary for the iTaukei Affairs Board, Apakuki Kurusiga said the payment was put to a stop by the Minister for Fisheries and Forests, Osea Naiqamu because only some people were receiving the payment.

He said the fishing levies should be distributed evenly to the owners of the fishing ground (iqoliqoli).

Mr Kurusiga said the new levies had been supported by the iqoliqoli owners in Vanua Levu and also the fishermen.

He said the consultation about the new fishing levies would be carried out Fiji wide.

In the past, he said demands made by the iqoliqoli owners were too excessive but this time a formula would be followed.

Mr Kurusiga said the practice of good will payment was a trend that was accepted but only some, including chiefs were the recipients and the rest of i-qoliqoli owners were not.

In fact he said they were not aware of such payments.

He said Government was changing this policy so that the payment was transparent and all i-qoliqoli owners would receive their share.

The critics of this new policy according to Mr Kurusiga only wanted the fees to be shared by the chiefs and only some members of the iqoliqoli owners.

Mr Naiqamu had earlier told the Fiji Sun that he wanted this matter debated and passed in parliament in its next sitting.
