Police have called on the public to report any sightings of underage children driving.

Police director traffic, Senior Superintendent (SSP) Mahesh Mishra has stressed that no person under 17 should be driving.

This is after a father collapsed and was rushed to hospital after he heard his son, 13, crashed their family car on Sunday.

The boy was allegedly driving to the shop when the car hit another vehicle at Votua Street, Samabula in Suva.

He and occupants of the other car were not injured.

SSP Mishra said: “This is a very rare case we have recorded where an underage driver is driving a vehicle.

“There must be similar unreported cases.

“It is an individual responsibility in the particular house or place where the vehicle is and responsibility of the person who is legally in charge or owner of the vehicle,” he said.

SSP Mishra said Police would not tolerate this type of behaviour and Police would continue to raise awareness.

“We want public to assist the Police and without them we will not be able to do it.

“We need to take these things seriously and must stop this,” he said.
