With over 80 bridges and crossings affected by Tropical Cyclone Winston, 23 are now prioritised for more permanent structural restoration works. This was confirmed by the Fiji Roads Authority maintenance works manager Aram Goes.

“So far we have completed two full permanent bridge restorations on Vanuabalavu,” Mr Goes said.

Mr Goes said the remaining bridges and crossings were currently undergoing design investigations and geotechnical testing arrangements.

“The designs can take several months to complete, depending upon the complexity of the design,” he said.

Mr Goes said the environmental impact assessment reports were also required for any structure that affect the waterways.

“These can take time for approval from the Department of Environment,” he said.

“To complete all these repairs FRA will require targeted Government funding exceeding $40m over the next two to three years to complete.” Meanwhile, Mr Goes said a full permanent bridge restoration would commence in Ovalau this weekend.
