Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has left the country for the United Nation (UN) formal ratification of the Paris Agreement on climate change in New York.

This was confirmed to the Fiji Sun yesterday the Deputy Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Esala Nayasi.

Last month Mr Bainimarama signed Fiji’s Instrument of Ratification of the Paris Agreement and Fiji became the first country to formally approve the UN Climate deal agreed by 195 nations in Paris last December.

At the signing he said it was a historic occasion for Fiji as it took a positive step towards implementing the landmark Paris Agreement, adopted last year.

He said it was vital that every nation also joined Fiji in taking this step to demonstrate their commitment to this agreement, so they could stop the serious threat climate change continue to pose to Small Island and developing states around the globe.
