The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women have donated new furnishings for women market vendors.

Minister for Local Government, Housing, Environment, Infrastructure and Transport Parveen Kumar was the chief guest at the event and paid tribute to the UN Organisation in assisting the women market vendors.

“The kind donation by the UN Women in improving the furniture at the Suva Women Market Vendors accommodation is timely and noteworthy,” he said.

“The Ministry is genuinely committed in improving the trading conditions of all market centre’s in Fiji and a number of initiatives are in the pipeline including capital upgrade, capacity building program for the vendors and market management and certainly promoting youth and women in micro business setup.”

The furnishings included mattresses, bunk beds, tables and folded chairs which will be of use to women who are travelling from rural areas to sell their produce at the Suva Market.

UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women Country Representative Aleta Miller said: “Markets for change aims to improve the working conditions of market vendors, who are predominately rural women and help them to increase their earnings.

“Producing and selling is hard work and having a safe and comfortable place to rest, sleep and meet will make a big difference to many women.”
