A farewell for the Vodafone Fijian Under-23 football side, heading for Brazil, was organised at the Fiji Football Academy in Ba yesterday.

The team will be playing build-up games during their tour, which will be a qualifier for the Rio Olympics.

Speaking at the event, Fiji Football Association (FFA) national head coach, Frank Farina, encouraged the players to perform well and make the most of the opportunity.

“To do things you need to sacrifice or to get things you have to sacrifice,” Farina said.

“To have this opportunity, do not let it go because it is a memory you will have for a lifetime, something you will never forget bringing pride to the whole country of Fiji.”

Additionally, FFA president Rajesh Patel said a large sum of money was being spent for these build-up matches and urged the players to play and represent Fiji in a decent way.

“Spain tour cost us more than $450,000 and this tour is costing us around $300, 000.

“You are flying the Fijian flag. It is something you are playing for your vanua, you are playing for your family so do it in a very decent and disciplined manner,” Patel told the team.

He also thanked Vodafone for the sponsorship.

Vodafone Fiji sponsorship manager, Adriu Vakarau, also wished the team the best for their tour.

“Today, before the Vodafone Fiji U23 football embarks on their journey for the build-up tour, we wish our young brigade the very best,” Vakarau said.

The team leaves for the tour on Monday.
