Director National Disaster Management Office Akapusi Tuifagalele has thanked members of agencies and ministry staff who worked tirelessly through the Tropical Cyclone Winston relief operations.

He made the comment during the vakacirisalusalu (thanksgiving and farewell) for members of Team Central Division at Vunimono Hall, Nausori last Friday.

He said, “I’m very happy to see everyone coming here to help other Fijians out even while having their own problems at their homes.

Mr Tuifagalele said there was a lot of commitment shown by the agencies and ministries to the NDMO and to the office of the Commissioner.

“The relationship and commitment is still there and it’s even stronger now; and this is just to recognize everyone’s hard work, sacrifice, sleepless nights that has been going on for the last 60 days.

“This farewell is a show of appreciation of what they have done for us and our country.

“As of April 19 the State of Natural Disaster declaration ended, and the agencies and ministries have moved back to their respective organisations in terms of resources, personnel and vehicles.

“It’s not only the Commissioner Centrals office and his team, also around the country, people are now thanking and farewelling the officers who are returning to their normal duties in their respective organisations,” he said.

Also present and included in the vote of thanks were members of the Police force, Republic of Fiji Military Forces, National Fire Authority, Government reps, and non-governmental organisations such as Rotary Club, Fiji Red Cross, and religious groups around the country.

Fiji Police Force Commissioner of Central Division Setareki Tale said I am thankful to every individual who lent a hand during the recovery period.

“This event is to acknowledge all agencies involved in response to the TC Winston appeal.

“We would like to thank all those who were here physically to support us, and those who aren’t able to be here but sent donations and other forms of help to Fiji in the devastation,” Mr Tale said.

Mr Tuifagalele said he expected the other divisions show their gratitude to cyclone relief workers in a similar manner.
