Intermittent fasting is the best prescription for many health problems such as diabetes and obesity.

This was proposed by the chair of Diabetes Fiji, Doctor Wahid Khan during the primary care practitioners training on diabetes mellitus/foot care at the Friendly North Inn in Labasa yesterday.

Dr Khan said intermittent fasting was going on without eating food for 20 hours especially after lunch till breakfast for the next day, which means you miss out dinner.

“The liver produces cholesterol in the early mornings,” Dr Khan said.

“During night time fasting what happens is that you don’t give liver any food to work on.

“But the liver needs to produce cholesterol to work on which will have to come from inside the body.

“It is important to have cholesterol in the body but too much cholesterol is bad for health.”

Dr Khan said people should form a habit to fast to improve their health.

“What I am proposing and re-proposing for people to start practising intermittent fasting at least twice in a week,” Dr Khan said.

“Over the centuries till now faith based groups have been fasting during special occasions.

“We should form a habit to fast at least twice in a week.”
