The Government had to drain out financial assistance from its 2016 Budget to help with Tropical Cyclone Winston rehabilitation work and relief efforts.

This was revealed by the Acting Prime Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum in Parliament yesterday after the Opposition leader, Ro Teimumu Kepa, asked how Government was financing the cyclone’s rehabilitation work.

“As you all know Cyclone Winston left a trail of devastation especially when we don’t know where the cyclone path was coming from,” he said

He said it affected maritime areas and rural areas in Fiji in particular Viti Levu, destroyed households and communities. He said there were loss of lives.

“Production of domestic  goods and services including infrastructure were also affected,” he said.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said they presented the 2016 Budget and the nation set its priorities.

“After February given the devastation of cyclone Winston, we adjusted our priorities.”
