Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says the Opposition petition on the Great Council of Chiefs is a waste of time.

He was on his way back to Fiji from New York, where he signed the Paris Agreement, when Parliament debated the petition. It was rejected.

“I have a statement coming out later. I was not here,” he said.

He said: “we have gone without the GCC”  for the past 10 years and the economy had continued to grow.

The petition was to allow public submissions before a parliamentary Standing Committee about a proposal to reinstate the GCC.

Mr Bainimarama said the Opposition should not have brought it out in the first place because it was a waste of time.

He has not changed his position since the GCC was scrapped.

Wrong End

Mr Bainimarama said the Opposition had got the wrong end of the stick when it accused his Government of trying to destroy democracy.

He was commenting on the heated debate in Parliament on a Government motion for the suspension of the Standing Orders.

“They could not figure out what we want done. All we want was the interpretation. They think we want to destroy democracy,” he said.

Diplomatic Relations

Mr Bainimarama has dismissed claims that we do not appreciate relief efforts by foreign governments.

National Federation Party MP Tupou Draunidalo questioned why we were developing diplomatic relations with countries in Africa when we have neighbours like New Zealand and Australia.

Mr Bainimarama said that Fiji appreciated NZ and Australian assistance and it was time she read the newspaper to know what was happening in the country.
