National Fire Authority’s (NFA) investigations are still underway to determine the cause of two residential fires — one in Navua and the other at Cunningham, Suva.

In Navua, a fire destroyed a two-bedroom house on Monday at Rampur Store Road. The family of five, who are now homeless, are sheltering at the Nakaulevu Assemblies of God. The family survived the inferno.

In Cunningham, a fire destroyed a five-bedroom house off Biau Drive at Stage Two.

What was to be a family lunch across the road turned into an afternoon blaze but the Cunningham housekeeper, Mataiyasi Ledua, is thankful no one was hurt.

“I had taken my children to my parent’s place and we were having lunch when some children next door told us he could see smoke coming out of the house. When we rushed in we could only save our flat screen TV from the burning flames,” she said with tears.

She said although the house belonged to her husband’s uncle – a businessman in Ono-i-Lau – they had worked hard to get everything for the house.

NFA chief fire officer Qionilau Moceitai said: “The NFA teams are on the ground doing investigations to determine the cause of fire in Navua and Suva.

“We will disclose the causes of fire once we have fully done our investigations.”
