New Law Timely To Prevent False Information
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama

Giving false information is a serious offence in many jurisdictions. Associated laws contain jail terms.

Parliament  passed the False Information Bill. The new law says that anyone found guilty of giving false information would face a penalty of up to 10 years in prison.

It is designed to deter people from giving false information for pecuniary gain when applying for Government assistance.

In allocating financial help Government expects a certain amount of honesty from applicants. The new law will reinforce that.

It suggests that there seems to be a culture of dishonesty and it’s difficult and even practically impossible to monitor all the use of financial help given.

It’s incumbent on all the applicants to be truthful in filling forms and using the assistance for the purpose it was intended.

It will ensure that assistance will go to the right people.

False information laws can be found in many jurisdictions. This new law is timely because it will come in handy during rehabilitation.

Happy Birthday, Prime Minister

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama celebrated his 62nd birthday yesterday and among people who congratulated him was the Opposition Leader Ro Teimumu Kepa. That was a fine gesture from Ro Teimumu, who a day earlier, had handed a SODELPA cheque of $77,000 towards the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief and Rehabilitation Fund.

When the two leaders come together for a common cause, it’s a symbolism of unity and co-operation despite their political differences.

Mr Bainimarama reaches another milestone in his life. The  many messages of best wishes that reached his office clearly showed that he is held in high regard by  people.
