Veronica Angelina Narayan, 37, is a Braille translator at the Fiji Society for the Blind.

Born blind, she attended Saint Luke’s Kindergarten, Saint Marcellin Primary School and Cathedral Secondary School and then Fiji Society for the Blind for pre-vocational studies.

She also attended a 10-month Duskin Leadership Course sponsored by Duskin Group in Japan.

“I really learned a lot at Fiji Society for the Blind; I was able to learn, cook, sew as well as learn other skills required for daily living,” Ms Narayan said.

After graduating in 2003, Ms Narayan said there were hardships in finding employment but she didn’t allow that to be a drawback.

She applied for the Braille translator position, which required translating examination papers and text books provided by the ministry.

“I really wanted to work at Fiji Society for the Blind because the school caters for the blind and visually impaired, and only this school has the resources and the equipment for people like us to use,” Ms Narayan said.

Executive director at the Fiji Society of the Blind Barbara Farouk said: “She not only translates papers for the school into Braille but also exam papers for the Ministry of Education where she is paid an allowance to translate papers into Braille for the blind students in primary, secondary and university under the supervision of the Ministry’s officer.

“After students sit the paper, Veronica de-braille it so that it can be understood by markers,” she said.

Ms Narayan enjoys being a Braille translator since 2008 and has never looked back.

She is a reminder and proof that no disability should stop a person from earning.
