A 33-year-old mother who was charged in relation to the alleged murder of her infant baby has been referred to St Giles Hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

Torika Kenona from Yasawa-i-Rara Village in the Yasawa islands, who was charged with one count of murder, appeared before chief magistrate Usaia Rauvili at the Suva Magistrates Court yesterday.

Ms Kenona allegedly buried her infant baby after giving birth on April 5 at Namuana Village in Kadavu.

Prosecution yesterday had objected to bail citing that it was an indictable offence and made an application that the matter be transferred to the High Court.

Prosecution also informed the court that they had been advised by the investigating officer of the case that the accused had been sick on her way to Suva.

Legal Aid lawyer Lavinia David confirmed to the court that the accused had no history of absconding bail. Ms David also asked the court if her client could undergo psychiatric evaluation at St Giles Hospital.

Chief Magistrate Ratuvili granted this and ordered that the accused be remanded at the St Giles Hospital and undergo psychiatric evaluation to determine whether she was aware of her actions or not.

The matter has been adjourned to May 13 to check on the report of the psychiatric evaluation of the accused.
