Police have revealed the first photos of the car that mysteriously disappeared with the Kumar family 10 years ago.

The discovery of the car half-buried in mud and sand in the Navua River bed moves the Police closer to solving the mystery.

Police chief of intelligence and investigations, Superintendent of Police (SSP) Luke Navela said they hoped the car would contain vital evidence.

“We know there will be additional evidence such as bones that may answer questions of the two missing children of the Kumar family,” SSP Navela said.

The children Dipshika Kumar, 9, and Edwin Kumar, 3, and their parents, taxi driver Davendra Kumar, 42, and Nirupa Devi, 32, were last seen leaving the Assemblies of God Church at Calia in Navua in a white taxi at around 9.30pm on a rainy night of April 19, 2006.

One years later, the parents’ remains, identified by the only surviving daughter Deepika Kumar, were found at a beach in Pacific Harbour. Dipshika and Edwin are still unaccounted for.

Yesterday, for the second day in a row,   Police divers from the Police Special Response Unit (PSRU) cleared sand and mud to prepare the car to be pulled out today. They tried to lift the car yesterday but aborted attempts because the car would not budge.

Police are extra careful to protect the  car from falling apart and losing vital clues and evidence.

The divers have only managed to dig and find one of the tyres of the white Toyota Corolla registration number, LT 1511.

The other three tyres are still deeply embedded in the mud and sand. A  crane would be at the river today to salvage the car.
