International Secondary School student Maia Ramsden broke a 12-year record when she clocked a time of 2.21.93minutes in the sub junior girls 800 metres during the Coca-Cola Games last Saturday.

And she aims to lift her performance further by taking part in the Melanesian Games in July at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.

Ramsden broke Wainimala Junior Secondary’s Maria Sainimasi record of 2.24.77 which was set in 2004.

After winning gold in the 1500 girls Open grade last Thursday, Ramsden achieved her goal of stamping her mark in the annual athletics meet.

“It feels really good to win the second gold for International and I’m so happy and overwhelmed for what I’ve achieved,” Ramsden said.

“Before coming to the Coke Games I made a goal for myself to stamp my mark here and that’s exactly what I did. It hasn’t been easy during training and preparing for this event but with the help of my coach who has been so good.

“It’s one thing to train but it’s another to have someone there who will push you but also know when you need to stop and have a break.

“My focus now is on the Melanesian Games and looking to get in to compete as it will be a good platform to see where I stand,” she said.

“I want to fulfill my dream of becoming a professional athlete and I think I have a good start to becoming just that.”

Athletics Fiji president Joe Rodan Senior said Ramsden could take part in the Melanesian Games on an invitational basis.

“She needs to be a resident in the country for five years to be able to represent Fiji,”Rodan said.

“But she could take part on an invitational basis.”
