First-five Alekisa Caginitoba was the toast for Ratu Navula College Under-17 side as they pipped Natabua High School 20-19 in the Vodafone Fiji Secondary Schools Under-17 final at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka yesterday.

Natabua High came from behind to draw level 19-19 at the final whistle and forced the game into extra-time where Caginitoba’s drop goal sealed the one-point win.  Ratu Navula walked away with $1500 while NHS collected $500.

What happened: Ratu Navula started strongly with their first try in the fourth minute through Isimeli Vatanitawake and converted by Caginitoba. In the eighth minute Saimone Naceiwabau slotted a drop goal to close the gap 6-1. But minutes later Caginitoba replied with another droppie to extend the lead 7-1. In the 18 minute Caginitoba dashed from 10 metres to score a try and converted by Aminiasi Ranuinui 13-1. With minutes remaining in the first spell Caginitoba added another two points via penalty.

Half time: Ratu Navula 15 – 1 Natabua.

NHS came back strong with Orisi Camaraka kicking a penalty 15-3. In the first 20 minutes NHS dominated play scoring through Naceiwabau and converted by Camaraka 15-9. Five minutes later Sireli Gusuna scored a try for Ratu Navula 19-9. Three minutes later Naceiwabau scored in the corner to send to raise Natabua’s hopes as they trailed 19-13. Right at full time Anare Maikalou sneaked his way over to score a try and managed to convert it as they drew level 19-19.

In the second minute of the second extra time Caginitoba sealed the win with a drop kick after he was set-up by the forwards.

Star turn: Caginitoba played a man of the match performance.

Big play:  Naceiwabau played well for Natabua High School.

Comments: Ratu Navula College principal Setareki Merekula said, “I take my hat off for the boys as they proved themselves in winning the U17 grade. Today’s win shows that the boys actually reaped what they had sowed.”

Natabua High School coach Raikiwasa Loanakadavu said, “The boys played well in the final. We made a strong come back in the match but it was not enough. Congratulations to Ratu Navula.”
