Ian Ravouvou Muller’s outside the box thinking has seen him investing in setting up a company which builds paddle boards locally.

His business, Fiji Surf Company, is one of the exhibitors at the Fijian Tourism Expo 2016 being held at the Denarau Convention Centre. The company builds paddle boards to international standards but with Fijian designs on its upper side and their display drew many buyers and attendees during the expo.

Fiji Surf Company, based in Nadi with its factory in Sonaisali, and is being marketed as competitive in price to those manufactured overseas.

The unique concept that Mr Muller has introduced is the top side of the board being designed to the way that one would like it to be – basically custom-made.

“You just send us your design and our graphic artists will create the design as you gave us and make it very attractive,” he said.

“We have something special here and want to keep it unique in that sense. We Fijians need to do something to call our own and be proud of it.”

Mr Muller said Fijians need to be proud of making things and putting their brand name on it.

“We created our own Fijian brand board and manufactured under the Fijian Made campaign and we wanted to have our own outfits and Fijians to be riding their own boards,” he said.

Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism, Faiyaz Siddiq Koya, described the innovation as: “Great that we are actually doing things like this.

“This is good for the tourism sector because we will host the World Surfing League and the Stand Up Paddle Board World Championships. It’s a great platform to build on.”

Tourism Fiji executive chairman, Truman Bradley, said this will be the opportune time to showcase this locally-made product during the Stand Up Paddle Board World Championships to be held in Fiji in November.
