Three families have been left homeless after a double-storey block of flats containing five flats was destroyed by fire in the low-cost housing at Votualevu in Nadi yesterday afternoon.

One of the house owners Timoci Tagidrau said he was a sleep when he heard people screaming outside.

“We tried saving a few things from our house and I ran out with two of my family members who were also in the house,” Mr Tagidrau said.

“The fire started from the middle flat in the top bedroom and it really spread quickly. After saving some of our belongings we had to go and help our neighbours,” he said.

Mr Tagidrau said he had been living in that house for over 20 years and had also raised his family and children in it.

“At the moment we do not know where to go but we will try and assemble what we have salvaged and then we’ll see from there.”

NFA assessment

Chief fire officer Qionilau Moceitai said the National Fire Authority received a fire emergency call at 1.42pm and immediately responded to the fire call.

“Upon arrival at 1.54pm, the fire team saw the double storey flat engulfed in flames. The team used deliveries of water from the fire trucks to extinguish the fire.”

NFA advises members of the community to take heed of fire safety advices seriously.

“The fire also threatened adjacent flats but this was prevented as the fire was brought under control,” he said.

“No one was injured. NFA investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire,” Mr Moceitai said.

Meanwhile, Police spokesperson Naina Ragigia confirmed the incident.

“It is a block flat and three of these flats have been damaged by the fire.

“There was no injury and investigations are continuing, “she said.
