The Land Transport Authority will be assisting the Fiji Rental Car Association in providing a background check on drivers who wish to hire rental cars.

This was one of the main recommendations proposed by the association to LTA following their meeting in Valelevu yesterday.

LTA chief executive officer Naisa Tuinaceva said the meeting was timely following the fatal accident on April 24 in Samabula which claimed two lives.

Association president, Mohammed Sareem said: “This is a daily challenge for us as a business and that is ensuring that our hired cars are kept well and returned back safely.

“Thus we have no control or idea as to who our hirers are; thus if we introduce this system then we will be able to curb such tragic incidences by making sure that people who hire our cars are safe drivers.”

Mr Tuinaceva said LTA would also be looking at setting up an online portal to make it convenient for rental car owners to view a driver’s background.

“We will be looking at this change as it will assist both in our work in making sure that our roads are safe for everyone,” he said.

Compulsory to endorse second driver for car rental

It will now be compulsory for anyone who wishes to hire rental cars to endorse a second driver.

Mr Tuinaceva said this would help to ensure that the cars did not fall into the wrong hands.

“As we have witnessed in the past that majority of the rental cars that are involved in these fatal accidents are used by another person and not the person who hired the car in the first place,” Mr Tuinaceva said.

“This needs to stop and this is one of the best ways to address this issue.”

Fiji Car Rental Association president, Mohammed Sareem said: “From now, on rental car hirers will need to nominate a second driver while filling up the form.”

Mr Sareem said it was imperative for rental car owners to put stickers on their car so anyone who wished to complain about the use of the cars could call the rental car owners directly.
