The Fijian Blues women’s team need to beat Samoa in their final pool match today to keep their chances of reaching the quarterfinals alive.

This was followed their 3-0 loss to New Caledonia on Tuesday night but yesterday regrouped and came back strongly to beat Kiribati 3-0.

The Fijians dominated from the first set winning 25-18 and continued their dominance as they displayed a strong attacking and defensive game while Kiribati had no answer at all.

The Blues continued their dominance and won 25-15 at the end of the second set and finished off with a 25-15 win in the third set.

Fijian Blues coach Esava Tikoenavuli said the players improved from their performance against New Caledonia.

“We identified our weaknesses from our game against New Caledonia the girls regrouped well and came back strongly against Kiribati,” he said.

“We will now look forward to our game against Samoa on Thursday which is a must win for us.

“To beat Samoa we will need to improve our defence.”

Kiribati

Meanwhile, a Kiribati women’s official said lack of qualified coaches in the island is their main challenge.

Acting coach Tibaa Ruoniti said they need qualified coaches in the island.

“We don’t have proper coaches. We need overseas coaches and trainers to come to Kiribati and teach us the sport and play it the right way. The girls are playing and learning at the same time and this is a good exposure for them,” Ruoniti added.
