RFMF Band Ready To Wow Queen

The 45-member Republic of Fiji Military Forces Brass Band departed for the United Kingdom yesterday.

They will take part in one of Britain’s biggest celebrations of the year – the 90th birthday celebrations of Queen Elizabeth II.

Leading the band is Lieutenant Colonel Serevi Vananalagi.

He said the band will not only showcase Fiji to the world, but the cultures of the Pacific.

A double hull canoe, built in 2014, known as Adi Eta will also be on wheels and is one of the centre pieces for the global event.

The canoe will be escorted by six to eight band members with those in the canoe dressed in traditional garb.

The canoe is the work of Joji Marau, Head of School of Mechanical Engineering at the Fiji National University.

Rehearsals for the four-day celebrations will begin a day after they arrive in Britain.

At a briefing, Lieutenant-Colonel Vananalagi reminded band members of their role and mission while in Britain.

While the Queen’s birthday was last month, celebrations proper will take place from May 12 to May 15.

Tickets for the event have been sold out.

RFMF Commander, Rear Admiral Viliame Naupoto will represent Fiji at the event.
