Bougainville challange

Team 3FIR came out 17-7 winners over Engineers as the annual rugby Bougainville Tanoa Challenge got underway at the Republic of the Fiji Military Force (RFMF) grounds in Nabua yesterday.

The clash lived-up to expectation as both teams performed to their best with great defensive skills being displayed. Engineers drew first blood with a converted try in the 25th minute of the game. Team 3FIR struck back with a try as they settled for a 7-7 draw at half time.

The second half was a torrid affair as both teams tried hard to score the much-needed points. This resulted in scrappy play and poor ball handling from the Engineers proved costly as Team 3FIR punished them by scoring two tries from loose passes leaving the final scores at 17-7.

Games co-ordinator Captain Waisele Cama commended both teams as they tried their best to put on a show despite the wet ground conditions.

“Both teams were well-prepared and I think the next games will see teams lift their performance.  From what I’ve seen today was good despite the poor weather,” he said.

The Bougainville Tanoa challenge is a weekly showdown with the aim to prepare their players for the annual Sukuna Bowl clash against Police.

Meanwhile, before the clash Engineers received their new set of jersey from R.C. Manubhai at the Engineering conference room in Delainabua.
