Government has suspended school grants to a Lautoka school over alleged misuse of grants previously paid to them.

This was confirmed yesterday by the Minister for Education, Mahendra Reddy.

Mr Reddy said the alleged discrepancies were found during the ministry’s investigation into the school’s accounts.

“Presently we are controlling all grants to the school from the ministry’s headquarters until our investigation is complete,” Mr Reddy said.

This was carried out during the absence of the school manager.

It was also reported that the manager had been suspended by the school management committee.

However, upon his return to the country last week, the manager immediately took over control of the school again.

It is believed that some teachers are worried that the present turmoil in the school would affect teaching and the students as the management committee also included family members of the manager.

Mr Reddy confirmed that the ministry immediately suspended the school head teacher to allow further investigations.

He said the future of the head teacher depended on the findings of the investigation and this would be dealt with by the ministry’s disciplinary arm.

As for the manager, he said was the prerogative of the school management.

The school manager could not be reached for a comment yesterday.
