Tourism significance

Tourism is a major source of foreign exchange and employment as well for the community because this industry is extremely labour intensive and businesses that operate within are small businesses.

Hence, dollars coming into the industry can be quickly felt by business owners and staff therefore boosting local spending.

The numbers of visitors into our shores have increased significantly over the years.

And a record was broken in 2015 whereby the total number of visitors for the year was 754,835.

More visitor arrivals can be expected this year due to more new routes introduced by Fiji Airways.

In February 2016, apart from Australia with 15,705 visitor arrivals, China led with the most number of visitor arrivals totalling 6123.

This was due to charter flights planned for Chinese New Year in February of 2016 by Fiji Airways whereby a three round-trip charter service was planned for Nadi-Taipei Taoyuan route.

On April 5, Fiji Airways began direct flights to Singapore and in June, they will also begin their direct seasonal flights to San Francisco.

Next week:

We can look at the latest release for Tourism Earnings which will be for December Quarter 2015 and Annual 2015.
