Airports Fiji Limited yesterday gave the media a sneak peak of the soon to be launched brand new international departures check-in terminal at Nadi International Airport.

AFL also launched fresh set of 3D renderings of the Nadi Airport Terminal Modernisation Project.

Airports Fiji executive chairman, Faiz Khan, revealed that part of the brand new departures check-in hall was going to be launched for use by July/August this year.

“We started planning this project four years ago. The main contractor has been effectively building for the past one and half years,” he said.

“So it’s been quite a journey thus far. But we can now see and feel what Nadi International Airport will look like when fully completed in less than a year’s time. There is a great sense of excitement all around.”

Need to remain focused

However, Mr Khan stated that they needed to remain focused.

“Today we share with you the great progress we have made towards achieving completion of the project,” he said.

“At the same time we know we need to remain focused on the challenges that lie ahead in order to complete this very important project.”

Mr Khan stressed their main objective was to enhance their passenger experience.

“We launched the upgraded departures lounge, duty free, food & beverage and specialty retail outlets in November last year,” he said.

“Since then we have launched a number of other tenancies in arrivals in 2016. We are soon going to launch half of the completely brand new departures checkin terminal.

“Self check-in kiosks and other IT innovations will also be part of the upgrades.”

“These upgrades are designed to enhance our passenger experience. Our objective is to firstly have seamless processing of our passengers whether departing or arriving.

“And secondly we want to have departing passengers wishing to leave their hotels or homes an hour or so earlier to come to Nadi International Airport and spend an hour extra with us, enjoying the new experiences we are creating.”

Collaboration

Mr Khan stated that to deliver a project of this size and complexity required team work and win/win collaboration with all parties involved in the project.

“We had a few big bumps during severe TC Winston and flooding from TC Zena that resulted in disruptions to work and reduced numbers of people at work,” he said.

“However, the contractor has since ramped up their efforts and managed to get the numbers up to around 350 people per day.

“Every day you see progress so hats off to Hawkins, Thinc and team AFL.

“Once completed we hope we will deliver a truly exceptional small international airport that all Fijians will be proud of.

“We are quietly confident that we will be winning international awards from next year.”
