The Fijian Whites defeated New Caledonia 3-2 in the final of the men’s Handy Finance Oceania Volleyball Championship at the Vodafone Arena last night.

The Kanaks won the first set 25- 20 but the Fijians bounced back to win the second set 28-26.

The crowd roared in the third set as the Fijians played well to win 25-20. But the visitors roared back to win the fourth set 25-17.

The final set was dominated by the Fijians winning the game 15 – 6.

Fijian Whites coach Tevita Lewetuitove acknowledged the impressive performance.

“They trained hard for this and the boys did a wonderful job. We’ve had a few challenges along the way, but the boys did their best and focused on their training to win,” he said.

Team captain Makiti Raratabu said he was proud to lead the team as they have been preparing for about two months and the overall hard work was worth it.

Lewetuitove added the journey does not end for the Fijian Whites as they will now focus on Asia Volleyball Championship.

“The boys were hungry for the win and it augurs well for the development of volleyball in the country.”
