When we did have the ball we gave it away too cheaply, says Farina

Possession and controlling the ball are two major areas that need to be improved for the Vodafone Fijian U23 side as they continue to prepare for the Rio Olympics.

The team arrived home yesterday from their Brazil tour.

Coach Frank Farina said: “You can’t defend for 90 minutes and when we did have the ball we gave it away too cheaply.

“The (other) teams showed class. When they got the ball, they kept the possession and again it came down to the fact that we could not keep the ball.

“When you play this way against good teams, they will punish you. But it was a great lesson.

“It is a good learning curve for and also a great humbling experience for the players themselves,” Farina said.

The tour has not only highlighted main areas that need to be improved before the Rio Olympics but also the need to up the standards of youth development programmes.

“We definitely need to improve and this is not just the national team, it’s the U23 team. It’s all through Fiji Football (Association).

“You can’t play football without the ball. You can’t win games without the ball and you can’t score goals without the ball.

“If we are not good enough in possession and we give the ball away too cheaply, we are always going to struggle and those are the biggest lessons we have learnt here,” he added.

“This shows us that we really have to get our youth development programmes up and running.

“We have got to improve on the simple things like technique, passing and controlling the ball.

“You see these players (in Brazil) who have been playing, their technique is fantastic. They keep the ball well and pass the ball well.

“We are not at that level yet and that only comes through development.

“The tour was fantastic and it has given us everything and more than what we expected,” Farina added.
