Seventeen cases of Zika virus have been reported in Fiji.

This was revealed by Minister for Health and Medical Services, Jone Usamate yesterday following the launch of the ‘Clean Up Fiji’ and ‘Fight the Bite’ campaign by the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.

“We are putting this programme in place to try and make sure that even if the number goes up, we have a proactive and concerted national effort to be able to eradicate it,” Mr Usamate said.

“The numbers was possible to increase,” he said.

“It is possible that the number will go up but the most important thing to focus on right now is what we need to do to address this.

“The most important thing we can do is to try and eliminate the place where mosquitoes breed and make sure that our people are aware of what they need to do to stop them from being bitten by mosquitoes.”

The Fight the Bite campaign focuses on the destruction of all mosquito breeding places.

All civil servants will be out for cleanup at all divisions around the country from Monday as part of the campaign.
