People from maritime communities who had lost their homes in Tropical Cyclone Winston are preparing to rebuild their homes.

This has been made possible through the Government’s Help for Home initiative.

The Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation being the lead agency for the Help for Home initiative has established distribution centres in the priority areas namely Tailevu, Naitasiri, Ba, Tavua, Ra, Lautoka, Bua, Cakaudrove and Taveuni.

The distribution centres have started operation from May 6, and have continued this week from Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The distribution will continue throughout until May 31, 2016 to ensure all those affected by Cyclone Winston are able to access the Help for Home initiative.

The Government in collaboration with Vodafone Fiji Limited has introduced pre-paid electronic cards, similar to the M-PAISA, that is topped up with a specific amount of funds. These cards are redeemed at the 10 hardware stores to purchase the hardware materials for rebuilding of homes.

Those affected in the Lomaiviti group, Koro Island and Vanuabalavu, who are currently in Suva have also been assisted through the distribution centre at the Fiji National Council for Disabled (FNCDP) complex at Brown Street.

A farmer from Nasau Village in Koro Josefa Jirijiri, 63, was overwhelmed to receive assistance worth $7000 through the Help for Home initiative. While receiving the card at the FNCDP complex on Wednesday this week, he expressed his appreciation to the Fijian Government for this timely assistance.

“I thank the Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama, for reaching out to the families in Koro Island and assisting us to rebuild our homes. This assistance is a great way forward for families in Koro to restore their lives. So we are thankful to the Government of the day for its immediate response to help the needy families.

“Currently I am staying in Suva with my daughter and her family. I had the opportunity to apply for Help for Home assistance at FNCDP.  I have received the card and I will be able to buy the building materials from the hardware stores in Suva and have it delivered to my village,” Mr Jirijiri said.

Yali Tukana, from Narocivo Village in Vanuabalavu, Lau, has also expressed similar sentiments on the initiative.

“We thank the Honourable Prime Minister for this assistance to help us rebuild our homes. We are proud of this Government and its commitment in helping the ordinary Fijians,” Mr Tukana said.

Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Rosy Akbar has also visited the distribution centres in the western and central divisions and Savusavu.

“We have visited almost all the centres and we have received a good response.  We hope to finish these schedules by May 31,” Minister Akbar said.
