What happened: Suva’s Sakaraia Naisua scored the winner in the 2-1 defeat of Jack’s Nadi during the Vodafone Premier League at Ratu Cakobau Park, Nausori yesterday.

The defending Vodafone Premier League champions went onto the attack early in the game applying pressure on Suva’s defence. Goalkeeper Benaminio Mateinaqara has to work extra hard blocking attempts from  Jolame Vulavula. Suva took awhile to settle into the game. Filipe Baravilala scored the first goal in the 23rd minute to give Suva a head start before halftime, 1-0.

Halftime: Suva 1-0 Nadi

Nadi found their second wind when Napolioni Qasevakatini scored the equaliser in the 56th minute to give the visitors a fighting chance, 1-1. Nadi played well testing the Suva defence but the capital side held their ground. With 10 minutes to go, Naisua sealed the win catching goalkeeper Vereti Dickson off-guard.

Big Play: Nadi’s resilience on the field allowed Qasevakatini to score the equliaser.

Star Turn: Suva played a good defensive game.

Comments: Suva coach Gurjit Singh;

“It was a good game even though we only trained for one week together. Fitness is a major area that we need to work on.

“After Nadi equalised I could see that they were getting tired but they held on to the very end and that is always good to see.”

Nadi Football president Navneeda Gounder said: “We have a few new boys in the team and they played very well. Suva is always a tough team to play against especially with the U23 players they have.

“But overall it was a good game and I am happy with how the boys played. We could have done better but to hold them right to the end was good enough.”
