Minister for Health and Medical Services Jone Usamate yesterday commended residents of Valenicina in Lami for taking a proactive approach towards the elimination of mosquito breeding sites in their environment.

Mr Usamate said: “I came here today especially to thank you for taking part in this clean-up campaign.”

The minister then joined the residents of Valenicina and Matata settlements in Lami to an afternoon clean-up as part of the Ministry of Health’s ‘Fight the Bite-Clean-Up Fiji’ campaign.

The campaign is a concerted effort by Government following the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Winston and the increasing number of mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue fever, Chikungunya and Zika.

“We need the people of this country to stand up and organise this themselves. First of all everybody has to clean their own house and their own compounds and then the whole community,” Mr Usamate said.

“We have to focus on our hotspot areas where there have been cases of dengue, Chikungunya and zika in the past.

Everybody needs to get the momentum going because that way it would have an impact on our country,” he said.
