President of Ethiopia promises support on climate change for Pacific islands

Fiji’s Ambassador Mosese Tikoitoga last week presented his credentials to the President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Dr Mulatu Teshome.

President Teshome expressed his gratitude to the Fijian Government for the positive move to establish an embassy as an initiative to further strengthen the bilateral relations between the two countries.

“Geographically, we may be thousands of miles apart, however physically, we are close at heart,” President Teshome said.

He offered the full support of his government in the establishment of bilateral relations between the two countries. Ambassador Tikoitoga said the Ethiopians were already finding it difficult to separate them from the crowd and many times spoke to them in Amharic only to realise from their response that they were Fijians.

He said the Fijian Government understood the strategic importance of Ethiopia and its links with other African countries and with international organizations working in Africa.

President Dr Teshome also expressed his sympathy on the devastating effect of Tropical Cyclone Winston and promised to support Fiji and other Pacific Small Islands Developing States combating the effects of climate change.

They agreed to work together on common issues facing both countries.
