The Speaker of Parliament, Dr Jiko Luveni, says she stands by her statement on violence against women reported by the Fiji Sun yesterday.

She said: “Sometimes we women aggravate the situation; sometimes we know exactly what our husbands don’t like and then we do it. What do you expect?”

She said yesterday “we need to address the realities” of domestic violence.

She added a husband and wife should learn to work together in order to build a loving and enjoyable relationship.

“If they can enjoy and make life work between themselves then there will be no violence,” she said.

A woman must know the personality of her husband, she added.

She defended her statement saying it was said in context to help women and protect them.

“We must address the realities,” he said

She said “we need to change” and strengthen family relationships. She said children must be taught that violence was not acceptable and values should be instilled in them.

He said the Government or leaders cannot be blamed for domestic violence.

She said it should be addressed in the home, in the family. She said those who criticized her had taken her statement out of context.
