Wales Coach Blames Lack Of Preparation

It’s been a very mixed week for Sevens rugby in Wales.

Last Thursday, James Davies, Cory Allen, Luke Treharne, Sam Cross and Luke Morgan were all included in the GB Olympics training squad, handing them the opportunity to stake a claim for a seat on the plane for Rio.

But then last weekend, Wales 7s had a couple of days to forget in Paris in the penultimate round of the World Series.  They were well beaten in all three group matches, losing to Samoa (52-10), Fiji (33-14) and Scotland (35-7), before going on to lose to Portugal in the Shield final, winning just one of their six matches.

It’s a disappointing display which reflects the practical problems faced by the Sevens set-up and provokes a debate over what is the best way forward for the team.

At present, only four players are on WRU Sevens contracts – Treharne, Cross, Ben Roach and Nicky Griffiths, who is in his last year.

Wales coach Gareth Williams – who will be part of the GB management team in Rio – admits there are challenges and would ideally like to see the number of contracted players doubled.
