Two Sangam students in Labasa were more than excited yesterday when they were announced winners of the Northern Hindi Teachers Association oratory contest.

They are Elisha Pillay, a Year Eight student of Labasa Sangam Primary School and Shainya Kumar, a Year Ten student of Labasa Sangam (SKM) College.

There were participants from 16 primary schools and eight secondary schools, in the contest held at the Bulileka Ram Leela Mandir Hall in Labasa.

Elisha, 13, of Qelewaqa, Labasa, said this was the first time she took part in an oratory contest.

“I spoke strongly on the importance of Hindi language because there is a need to keep this language alive in this modern world,” Elisha said.

“We should know how to read, write and speak in Hindi language because it is our identity.”

Shainya of Tuatua Housing Labasa spoke on the significance of Indian culture and mother tongue.

“I also bravely sang a song and said a poem related to the topic,” the 14-year-old said.

“I thank the association for organising an oratory contest providing a platform for us to speak on our mother tongue and highlight on our thoughts and opinion.

“Also it provided us the opportunity to bring out the best from what we have learned in school and home.”

Northern Hindi Teachers Association programme co-ordinator Parveena Nand said the programme was organised in line with the Ministry of Education’s effort to bring about the revival of the Hindi language.
