A library opens doors for children into a big world for encouraging innovation, curiosity and problem solving, said Acting Director of Primary Education Hen Chand.

“Libraries give children the opportunity to explore, research, experience new ideas, and get lost in wonderful stories, while at the same time providing much needed ideas and information,” Mr Chand said.

Mr Chand was speaking as the chief guest at the opening of the Andrews Primary School in Nadi on Wednesday. The school has 935 students.

He said libraries were important cornerstones of a healthy community.

“The school library is central to learning and plays a key role as a place for encouraging innovation, curiosity and problem solving,” he said.

He said it was important to have a library in this constant changing technological, social and economic environment.

“The school library is integral to the teaching and learning process; it facilitates the work of the classroom teacher and ensures each student has equitable access to resources, irrespective of home opportunities or constraints,” Mr Chand said.

“It also provides and promotes quality fiction to develop and sustain in students the habit and enjoyment of reading for pleasure and to enrich student’s intellectual, cultural and emotional growth.

“Collaboration with classroom teachers to plan, implement and evaluate inquiry-based programs that will ensure students acquire skills to collect, critically analyse and organise information, problem solve and communicate their findings.

“While the role of the school library remains constant, its design, digital platform, strategies and tools change as pedagogy and technology changes.”
