The Ministry of Education has recorded 119 cases and complaints involving  teachers in Term One only this year.

Minister for Education Mahendra Reddy said: “The number of cases we received in 2016 from January to April, in only one term is quite alarming.”

Mr Reddy revealed this number while speaking at the 117th Fiji Principals Association Conference at the Novotel Convention Centre in Lami, yesterday.

“While most of you are trying your utmost best to deliver the vision and mission of the Ministry of Education, some of us are also failing in our responsibilities as school heads,” he said.

“This is reflection in the increasing number of complaints and cases being referred to our offices daily.”

Mr Reddy said out of 119 cases, 51 relating to secondary schools for which investigations were carried out (this excludes a few cases which were solved).

“Our teachers are supposed to be the role models.

“Thus, we need to reflect on our roles as heads,” he said.

Mr Reddy said whenever the case comes to ministry, they would undertake a full detailed investigation and where necessary, they would protect teachers.
