EDITORIAL: Gutter level Comments Against Hayne, Fijians
Jarryd Hayne

Sydney Morning Herald columnist Peter Fitzsimmons has gone off the rails in his unprovoked attack on Jarryd Hayne and Fijians calling them “bastards”.

He is simply bitter that the Australians cannot have him on their side whether it’s a return to rugby league or a switch to rugby union. They know that Hayne is a talented sportsman who has also made a name for himself in American gridiron during his short stint there.

Ben Ryan and John McKee spotted his potential as a valuable asset to the Vodafone Fiji 7s team and the Flying Fijians and seized the opportunity.

Fitzsimmons, like other overseas commentators who criticized Hayne, is obnoxious. Labelling Fijians bastards is at the height of his arrogance.

Who does he think he is to dictate to us what we can do or can’t do. Ryan  and his team are working towards preparing the best squad for the Rio Olympics in August.

He will pick the best team he believes will bring home the gold. If it means dropping a player to include Hayne, then so be it.

Many fans in Fiji are delighted that Hayne is likely to be in the final 12 for the London 7s.

They don’t agree with armchair critics like Fitzsimmons. His baseless rant is symptomatic of those who shoot from the hip and do not fully understand the Fijian rationale behind the inclusion of Hayne.

It can only be interpreted as sour grapes because Hayne could have easily boosted the Australian 7s team and the Wallabies.

His condescending views reflect this big brother attitude of those in tier-one nations towards minnows of world rugby.

When nations like Australia, New Zealand, France and England take our best players, fast-track their residential qualifications so that they can represent their national teams, we see it as a positive development.

We don’t criticize them for poaching our players. Why can’t Fitzsimmons and his group do the same? Their gutter level comments deserve condemnation. They do no good to rugby and sports.
