Bua chief Ratu Matuku Nagagavoka has urged the Agricultural Department to identify and earmark an agricultural product specifically for the Bua district in the Bua province.

Ratu Makutu made the plea especially for the upcoming Bua District Council meeting which will be held at Tiliva Village next Wednesday.

“Dalo and yaqona have been identified as the major source of income for villagers of Wainunu and other districts in Bua but our district wants an agricultural product to boost the district,” Ratu Makutu said.

He said the dalo and yaqona do not grow well in his district but he requested the agriculture officers to undertake a survey and recommend the proper agricultural products that could be sustainably grown in their district villages.

“It’s very sunny weather condition even coconut trees have no coconuts and after Tropical Cyclone Winston and it will take years for coconut trees to recover.

“Sandalwood is a native plant of Bua and is very viable. However, proper planning is vital for this to develop this in the district.

“Sandalwood matures at 25 years and a tree can be valued at up to $75,000,” he said.

Meanwhile, recent reports had stated senior agricultural officer Bua Ilisoni Banuve saying that the projects earmarked for Bua included rice revitalisation, coconut development, cocoa rehabilitation, vanilla, cottage industry, land preparation and agricultural extension services.

The Bua District Council meeting will be attended by the Roko Tui Bua, Rupeni Kunaturaga, Bua provincial office staff and Government department officials in the North.

The district includes seven villages; Bua Lomanikoro, Dalomo, Tiliva, Waitabu, Navunievu Koroinasolo and Nawailevu with Bua Lomanikoro Vllage being the chiefly village and home of the paramount chief of Bua, the Turaga Tui Bua.
