Minister for Education Mahendra Reddy is urging teachers to improve the results in external examinations.

He said this during the 117th Fiji Principals Association Conference at the Novotel Convention Centre in Lami, yesterday.

“Last year, when we brought back external exams, we abolished scaling from exams.

“We set a target of 100 per cent pass, which we did not achieve.

“Some of us did understand the concept of aiming for nothing less than a perfect 100 per cent, but for some, it took time to digest.”

Mr Reddy said they must understand that for any organisation to function effectively, the aim should be to attain excellence and nothing else.

“As soon as we bring that target down, we are passing the message that we do not have belief in ourselves as leaders.

“Secondly, we do not have faith in the staff, students and other stakeholders to deliver excellence. This is the worst case of lowering the self-esteem and confidence of all those connected to the process.

“The target for this year is again nothing less than 100 per centand I challenge each one of you to deliver.

“By now, you all should know where you and your school stand in terms of the External Examination results of last year.”

Mr Reddy said all schools must have strategic plans.
