The University of Fiji vice-chancellor Professor Prem Misir in a press conference at Saweni Campus yesterday confirmed that the university had received full registration on April 25 from the Fiji Higher Education Commission.

“The University started in 2005 and, in 2011 the provisional registration from the Fiji Higher Education Commission,” Mr Misir said.

“But we are very proud that this year, on April 25th the Fiji Higher Education Commission people met and they granted us the full registration status as a local university in Fiji.”

He said this was good news for the university and the university heads would be working in collaboration with the current Government.

“What this means is that the Government of Fiji has fully recognised us as a fully-fledged university,” he said.

“The full registration enables us to have psychological eligibility with the Government of Fiji.

“This gives us much more leverage to get much more assistance from the governmental side and once we start to get a lot of co-operation from the Government in terms of assistance in kind, that will create a platform for us to encroach upon international funding.”

Mr Misir said the university being granted the full registration had brought about a lot of ease.

“This full registration has put to rest a lot of issues about the question of quality of higher education,” he said.

“This university has a long way to go and is going to achieve a lot of its aspects of the mission that has been set up to do.”

He said the university had the widest access to the students in terms of affordability in tuition fees which was the lowest with the university offering a foundation programme which was aggressive.
