The Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management, Meleti Bainimarama, will travel to Malaysia this week for the 31st Technical Committee Meeting for the Center for Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP).

He will also attend the International Knowledge Exchange on Rural Development.

At the Technical Committee Meeting, Mr Bainimarama will participate in policy recommendations and professional input that will assist in the implementation of programmes and projects in CIRDAP member countries.

The Permanent Secretary will also engage in a dialogue of best practices with senior Government Officials and international experts on rural development and agriculture at the International Knowledge Exchange on Rural Development meeting co-hosted by CIRDAP and the Government of Malaysia.

He will present an academic paper on Fiji’s initiatives on poverty alleviation and rural development through its commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Given the heavy reliance of Fiji’s rural population on natural resources for livelihood, the Permanent Secretary will further deliberate on the importance of SDG 14: Life Below Water and SDG 15: Life on Land for small island developing states such as Fiji.

The meetings will be attended by Rural Development and Agriculture Permanent Secretaries from the 15 CIRDAP member countries, and they will be joined by international development partners and academic experts.

The meetings will take place from the May 22 to 28.
