Seruiratu Meets WFP Deputy Regional Director

While in Bangkok, Thailand for the 72nd session of the UNESCAP, Minister Inia Seruiratu paid a courtesy call to the World Food Programme (WFP) deputy regional director for Asia and the Pacific Parvathy Ramaswami.

The Minister for Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management used the opportunity to thank the WFP for the assistance they had provided to Fiji in the wake of Tropical Cyclone Winston.

Mr Seruiratu said that the assistance rendered by WFP was timely especially with the Top-Up Cash Support to support families affected by Winston.

“Fiji’s is indeed grateful to the WFP for coming to the fore and offering to assist the economically disadvantaged when Fiji needed it most” Mr Seruiratu said.

In response, Ms Ramaswami reaffirmed that the WFP stands ready to assist if and when required. She said the operations in Fiji provided a platform to further extend WFP’s presence within the South Pacific region.

Discussions also revolved around the establishment of a WFP Country Office in Fiji to cater for the island states of the Pacific and areas of possible co-operation especially in logistics and warehouse management during natural disasters.

It was further agreed that discussions on these issues will be progressed when the Deputy General Director visits Suva later in the year.
