2 Charged For False Declaration

Two men appeared at the Ba Magistrate’s Court for allegedly making false declaration in the Help For Homes initiative in order to obtain benefit for themselves.

Eremasi Vecena and Saheem Ali of Tauvegavega Settlement, Ba have been charged for false representation in order to obtain benefit for themselves and are in Police custody.

State prosecutor Semi Babitu said Ali had previous counts of false declaration from 2004, 2010 and 2011.

Mr Babitu said Ali needed to provide surety for the bail application.

Ali told Magistrate Mosese Naivalu that he was sick, had heart problems and asthma.

Magistrate Naivalu remanded Ali for two weeks in custody.

Magistrate Naivalu then remanded Vecena in custody as well because of the seriousness of the case as it was of public interest.

The case has been adjourned to June 6.

Under the False Information Act 2016 any person convicted could face a sentence of 10 years imprisonment or a fine of $20,000 or both.
