Mike Brook, a well-known Fijian entrepreneur and tourism figure, has died.

Mr Brook, 68, died in New Zealand after a short illness.

George Rubine, owner of Pacific Reach Limited, a public relations, media and communication company, yesterday paid tribute to a close friend.

He said in Suva that Mr Brook was an “enthusiastic entrepreneur”.

“He was not only a loss to the family, but he was also a loss to Fiji,” Mr Rubine said.

Mr Brook (his full name was Michael Thomas Brook) came to Fiji in the 1970’s from Canada.

Prior to coming he was assistant manager of the 540-room Calgary Inn Hotel.

He operated Biddy’s Steakhouse which was later converted to Traps Bar in central Suva. He then bought into Castaway Resorts (Fiji) Limited and later became its proprietor.

He expanded Castaway from a single small island resort to a three-resort company, including Castaway  Savusavu and Castaway Taveuni.

While in Taveuni, he was concerned about the lack of transport for tourists to the island. That led to the setting up of Sunflower Airlines Limited in partnership with aviation leader Don Collingwood.

His other business ventures included the:

  • the formation of the Pacific Apparel Limited, a garment design and manufacturing firm specialising in uniform contracts,
  • securing South Pacific franchise for JCB international credit card,
  • the establishment and expansion of Sunnybrook Holdings (Fiji) Limited as an investment company and a management/marketing consultancy firm,
  • Investment and operational involvement in several firms in real estate development, graphics and design, advertising and tourism publications,
  • Formation of Significantly Original Holidays (Soholidays), an inbound tour wholesaler specialising in rural Fiji ecotourism services
  • Formation of Ovalau Tours and Transport and Ovalau Investments Ltd, as catalysts for Levuka development, concentrating on sustainable eco-tourism development.

This included providing development assistance to the award winning Devokula Eco-tourist Resort.

He was involved with several regional tourism projects. Mr Brook was the Canadian Honorary Consul for many years until he moved to Levuka where he lived until his death.

He was in the board of governors for Levuka Public School and elected a councilor in the Levuka Town Council. He served in the Fiji Hotel Association (director, president), Fiji Visitors Bureau (board member), then Fiji Employers Federation (board member), then Fiji Institute of Technology, Pacific Asia Travel Association, Private Hospitals Limited, Suva Chamber of Commerce, Levuka Chamber of Commerce.

Funeral arrangements are being made. Edited by Paula Tuvuki
