Manueli Tulo won the gold medal in the 56 kilogramme men’s category at the Oceania Weightlifting Championship at the Vodafone Arena, Suva last night.

He lifted 127 kg but was far from happy with his performance.

“I really wanted to put on a show knowing it’s a home crowd but my performance wasn’t up to par,” he said.

“For me I can lift 23 to 30 kilos more but I didn’t do that today, I didn’t know what happened, my mind just got switched off.

“My body weight, and preparation was fine, but I had a lot of things on my mind.”

Tula said winning the gold medal was all part of Team Fijis plan.

“We had a plan to capture a gold medal for the 56kg and be put in a good position.”

Tulo dedicated the win to his wife for her endless support.

“I would like to thank my wife who just delivered our baby two days ago and she has sacrificed a lot.

“I have two kids and I’m training overseas and tonight  I’m going to visit them knowing my daughter is waiting for me at home,” he said.

Meanwhile, in the junior grade, Fiji’s Sitiveni Timi took out the gold medal in the 50kg category.
