Island Route To Boost Economy

A big boost for economic activities and tourism developments in Kadavu after South Island Shipping Services confirmed that they have started their three-port route services to the island last month.

The company’s inter-island vessel MV Liahona has begun its service to Dravuni in Ono, Kadavu, Kavala Bay and Kadavu Koro where it spends a night. The vessel then returns through the other two ports reaching Suva on the afternoon of the same day.

Cruise ships visit Dravuni on regular basis since the island is renowned for its diving spot and is home to the world-famous Astrolabe Reef. Also nearby is the luxurious Kokomo Island Resort, which is now near completion.

The company’s operations director Ben Cavu said, the vessel was purchased and rebuild by the owner, with a view of providing services to his family in Burelevu in Kavala, Kadavu.

He said since it started its commercial activities back in the last quarter of 2013, the vessel has been heavily involved in servicing Government subsidised routes into Lau and Lomaiviti.

Mr Cavu added that this route would be serviced once every month- this is either at the beginning of the month or at the end. The route was once serviced by MV Kapaiwai of the Ikavuka Shipping before it ceased its operation.

Mr Cavu said people who are interested in using this service can call in at their office at Shed 11 at Port Mua-i-Walu in Walu Bay, Suva.
