The Nadi based- Vunayasi District School will be making their debut in the Fiji Schools Swimming Competition at the Damodar Aquatic Centre in Suva this weekend.

The school with a roll of 142 students will bring a team of 18 students, aged between seven to 14-years-old. The team have been training under the watchful eyes of former national swimming champion Marlene Blake.

“They have been training at the Nadi Sports Club for the last five weeks,” Blake said.

She indicated that one of the teachers approached one of their assistant coaches for them to take swimming as part of their curriculum.

“They wanted to take up the challenge and be part of the competition. It has been a wonderful opportunity for these students especially as first timers. They are really enjoying their swimming lessons and they look forward to it.”

She pointed out with the high drowning rate in the country, the teachers took the initiative to get every child learn how to swim.

“It has been a great opportunity for me to help these students learn the basic techniques and the same time seeing them want to learn more and more.”

However, Blake has tipped Swami Vivekananda College of Nadi to cause a few ripples in the competition with a tough challenge coming from Marist Brothers High School. In the primary category, Veiuto Primary School, Mount St Mary’s, Nadi Airport School, International Schools Suva and Nadi will be a force to be reckoned with.

“Also schools from Suva are also being challenged by the western schools.   It’s going to be a great competition and may the best school wins.”
